What One Should Understand About A DMX Merger

By Teri Farley

There was a time when the lights that are used on stage in theater and opera were controlled by hand. This means that if one wanted to created different effects from different sources, this was done manually. Today, things are made easier using a DMX Merger that allows a lighting technician to have greater control over the operation of lighting fixtures that are used in various productions.

Many times, one might visit a theme park or a concert and see all of the lights that are used. There might be various effects that are displayed which can make the experience quite pleasurable. This is possible through the technology used to control the effects that one can see. This is not done using one lighting source but several and in order to control all of them, a digital system is used.

The standard for digital communication networks is known as DMX512. The lighting and fixtures that one sees on any stage is controlled using this system. It involves a controller in the form of a PC and fixtures which emit light. The PC is used to control how the light functions and its various effects. The name DMX stands for Digital MultipleX and involves 512 different channels.

The number 512 shows that this is the number of channels that are involved in this network or universe. Each channel controls a specific function of the lighting fixture. There are also various values on each channel which allows a specific effect to show different results. So one channel might control the color wheel of the light.

This allows for greater control of the lighting fixtures which can move in various ways. The lights can change colors and effects simply by the push of a button. However, as simple as this sounds, it takes a professional such as a lighting technician, to really make things work and bring everything together for a stage performance.

One also has to realize that a DMX Merger only merges two or more DMX512 sources together. So a DMX USB interface can merge with a DMX lighting controller as long as they both have an out signal. This gives an individual greater control of the lighting that is used on stage in various performances such as the theater or opera.

Lighting technicians make use of this system and they are responsible for all of the effects that one sees on stage. There is lots of planning involved in these productions, even for the lighting. This is why having a good network is important, as this allows the technician to have the control they need to create the effects desired.

A DMX Merger is used control various elements in creative lighting which helps the production of a show to go smoothly. This is a long way from having everything done manually and allows for greater control. This allows for the performers of any venues to put on the best show. It also allows the audience to get the most out of what is being presented to them.
