Knowing your learning style helps you understand the content of different subjects better. You will also avoid wasting time in exercises that do not better your grades. For teachers, learning styles survey helps you identify the best way to handle different pupils and make the most of your contact hours. The concept of styles explains why pupils perform better in some subjects and not others.

There are three main types of learners based on their natural style. They are auditory, visual and tactile learners. Most people use a combination of styles but one style takes prominence over the others. There are professionals who can assist you to determine the style best suited for each child. This makes it easier to deliver content as well as solve problems.

Surveys on learning methods are designed to establish the character of a learner. Some of the questions asked revolve around books read, easy or quick solutions when in a fix, how one acts in public, etc. A question on reaction in case of an emergency like attack by an animal will also reveal the true character. The answers given indicate the perspective such a person has about life.

Visual learners are a category that best absorb information from maps, charts and diagrams. Their minds work by creating relationships or connections between information and images or techniques. This is their best way of remembering concepts taught in class. Long texts and narrations are always boring for this group. It is usually a waste of time to sit through narratives. Their solutions are based on diagrams or images.

Auditory learners understand what is taught by listening to presentations. Their memory of spoken words is excellent. Such a learner depends on listening and speaking to internalize and digest information. The eyes and mind of such a pupil might appear distance and distracted, but as long as he can hear what is being said, he understands it. These are the people who will repeat what was said word for word or ask a question on a subject you thought was being mentioned in passing.

Those who learn by engaging are referred to as tactile or kinesthetic learners. Their best class is where they are involved in experiments. They believe in physical results more than narratives. Kinesthetic learners express their ideas or desires by acting them out. You need to know how to decipher such signals.

Each class comprises of different types of learners. It is upon a teacher or facilitator to find a dynamic way of accommodating all of them. The best way is to consider the concepts being taught and thus find a way of delivering it effectively. A history or literature teacher can take care of different preferences by taking them on a tour to the theater or historical site.

To clearly understand the style of a student and thus handle him or her better, use a professionally designed test. You will get wrong and misleading results if you use amateurish tests. Use a combination of methods to ensure effectiveness in delivery of content. Different concepts or topics will be best understood when different methods are used.
